Seasonal Vegetable – Corn

INSECTS ARE MOST commonly found in two parts of the corn: the husk and, in some cases,  insects may burrow into the cob between the kernels. Some individuals are more stringent and choose not to eat corn directly off the cob due to these concerns.

Corn Kernels (off the cob):
When corn is removed from the cob —such as in canned or frozen corn— there is generally no concern that there are insects. If one cuts the kernels off the cob at home, the kernels should be put in a strainer and rinsed thoroughly under a stream of water.

Corn on the Cob:
Remove the husk (particularly important when grilling on a BBQ). If there is a heavy infestation visible on the husk, the corn should not be used. Wash the cob thoroughly under a strong stream of water and no further checking is necessary.
