Seasonal Vegetable – Cauliflower

Frozen Cauliflower
Needs an acceptable kosher symbol.

Fresh Cauliflower
Fresh cauliflower is prone to infestation and requires meticulous checking.

  • FILL UP a basin with hot water from the tap. Add Veggie Wash or liquid soap and mix well.
  • SEPARATE the cauliflower stems into small florets (the size you would find  in a typical bag of frozen cauliflower). Soak the cauliflower for 15 minutes in the soapy water. While it is soaking, use your hands to gently open the florets one at a time, allowing the water to penetrate.
  • REMOVE the cauliflower from the water and rinse well under a strong stream of water.
  • FILL UP a basin with hot water from the tap, without soap or Veggie Wash.
  • SOAK the cauliflower for 5 minutes. During this time, gently open the florets again.
  • REMOVE the cauliflower in small handfuls and vigorously shake them over a mesh cloth so the water from the cauliflower falls on the cloth.
  • POUR the water from the basin through the cloth and check the cloth.

IF INSECTS are found, repeat the process until no insects are present. If, after checking the third time, there are still insects, the cauliflower should not be used.
