Say L’Chaim – Ordering a Drink at a Bar

ENJOYING A DRINK at a bar can raise kashrus concerns. Here’s what to keep in mind:

What to Watch For:
– Verify the drink: Only order beverages you know to be kosher. Check the bottle for a hechsher.
– New bottle: Some are careful to only drink from a bottle opened in their presence to avoid mixing or contamination.
– Clean utensils: All shakers, stirrers, and blenders must be properly cleaned before use.
– Garnishes: Herbs must be checked for bugs, lemons and limes must be cut with kosher knives, and anything from jars (cherries, olives, etc.) needs certification. It is unlikely that a typical bar meets the standards, so garnishes should be avoided.
– Glassware: May be used if clean.

When in doubt, opt for the simplest possible drink and skip the extras.
