HOUSEHOLD ICE CREAM makers are a popular small appliance, especially during the summer months. Consumers often wonder if tevilas keilim is required.
It’s important to keep in mind two basic Halachos of tevilas keilim:
– Only utensils made of metal or glass require tevila; plastic utensils do not (Some toivel plastic without a brocha.)
– Only utensils that come into direct contact with food require tevila.
There are two types of home ice cream machines, hard ice cream machines (that operate similarly to a food processor) and soft-serve machines (that dispense the ice cream through a spout).
Hard Ice Cream Machines:
Only the bowl and paddle come in contact with food. If the bowl and paddle are made of metal (which is usually the case), they need to be detached from the machine and toiveled with a brocha.
Soft-Serve Machines:
These are more complex since the ice cream passes through internal piping before exiting through the spout. Any detachable components, such as bowls, need to be toiveled if they are metal.
If the internal piping and spout are made of plastic, tevila is not required. However, if any of these components are metal, there is a Halachic question about whether they require tevilas keilim. In such a case, one should consult with their personal Rav to determine the proper course of action. |
